UNC Football Recruiting 2010 Update 1/9/10
« on: January 09, 2010, 01:07:46 PM »
As of January 8, 2009 there were 12 total commitments in UNC's class of 2010.  Several former commits had their offers withdrawn due to off the field issues.

One of these, Johnnie Farms (OG), committed to UNC last year but was sent to Hargrave Military Academy in order to get his academics in order.  His scholarship was contingent upon completing the year at Hargrave.  He was dismissed from the academy following an undisclosed violation of school rules.
UNC's O-line has seen its share of tumult through recruiting, dismissals, and injuries in the past two years.

Jerrell Rhodes (RB), a teammate of Farms at Hargrave and native of Durham - Jordan High School, also lost his offer due to conduct violations at Hargrave.

Below lists the 12 verbal commitments:
Position rankings taken from ESPN.com

James Hurst         OT   #12   Member of ESPNU 150
Ty Linton             OLB  #27
Alex Smith           TE    #16
TJ Leifheit            OT    #33
Darius Lipford      OLB   #39
PJ Clyburn           ATH  #67   Projected to play S
Russell Bodine     C      #8
Sean Fitzpatrick   TE    #27
Jabari Price          CB    #66
DJ Bunn              S
Brendan Felder    ATH           Projected to play WR
Nick Appel           OT

James Hurst has already graduated from high school and will enroll early at UNC for this coming semester.  By coming in early, he may earn himself a starting job in the fall.

Also, today at the US Army All-American game in San Antonio, 9th ranked DT, Brandon Willis from James Byrnes High School in Duncan, SC is set announce his decision of which school he will attend.  He has narrowed his choices to UNC and UCLA.  Hopefully, he will choose to stay nearer to home.

In the coming months there should be several more commitments made as Butch & Co. continue to pursue up to 30 more interested prospects.  National Signing Day is February 3, the first day that recruits can sign letters of intent.  Expect more fireworks as we approach that date as well.

With the players listed as "athlete", does that generally mean they're awesome on both sides of the ball, and it's only up to Butch and Co. to decide where exactly they want to put them?

(And, on re-reading the article, I realise you also used Butch and Co.)

yeah I was wondering what "ATH" meant.  Wow, sucks about those conduct violations.  Wonder if another school will pick them up or if they've blown their chances of playing college ball for a shot at the big leagues.

ATH often also means the guy played QB, but he projects much better at another position.  High school coaches like to have their best player be the quarterback.  Or he could have been a wide receiver and running back (Johnny White type).  There is certainly some diversity of skills and options as to where to use that player.

Greg Little was an ATH three years ago.  He played mostly running back at Hillside in Durham and was expected to play wide receiver at UNC.  He started there but also ran end arounds and sometimes threw the ball.  He was moved to RB because we needed some more athleticism there.  Butch said after his excellent catches in the bowl game that he's now had a full year at the position he was recruited for.  He should improve even more next year.

Side note: Check out who is #1 with the top plays from bowl season.

Jerrell Rhodes has committed to play at Memphis.  But it sounds like he wasn't as big of a discipline issue as Johnnie Farms.

I am glad that we are drawing the line for guys.  That's how Butch came in to head coaching at Miami, under a black cloud that resulted from recruiting violations and Canes players landing in the police log too often.  We like a clean program.  There are plenty of other guys willing to do the right things.

Unfortunately, Brandon Willis threw everyone a curve ball by recommitting to Tennessee.  He had been committed to UT before decommitting about a week ago, and most sports writers and pundits figured the Vols were out of the picture.

Heel yes!  Thanks to Lane Kiffin's timing, Brandon Willis decommitted from UT due to the continuing exodus of Kiffin.  In fact, Willis was due to move in to UT last night.
Butch has now picked up his commitment.  Hopefully, this will be his last decommit.
More to come later.
